Penzance Bay - Elaine Bay, Marlborough Sounds – Sunday 9 February 2020
After a long and winding drive we arrived at Penzance Bay. It was a beautiful cloudless day. We set off on Archers Track which winds its way round Penzance Bay and drops down to Deep Bay where we stopped at a private bach for a drink and toilet stop. The track along to Deep Bay is in dense bush which gave welcome relief from the hot sun, though the sound of thousands of chirping clicking cicadas made our ears and heads ring. They were so dense in number that they frequently collided with us.
From Deep Bay the track was a little more open, giving us glimpses of Tarakaipa Island and the most beautiful views at Red Point which looked out past Tawhitinui Island to the open sea. From Red Point the track swings into Elaine Bay where we had our lunch stop on a grassy bank overlooking the beauty of this great spot.
From there we returned on the same track. A distance of 18 km and about 6 hours tramping time. It was a great day.
