February 2nd 2013 marked the official opening of the first section of The Old Ghost Road. The project is a partnership between the Mokihinui – Lyell Backcountry Trust and the Department of Conservation and is supported by community and business interests.  A 25 km section at the southern end of the trail has opened for mountain-bikers and trampers who wish to get their first experience of The Old Ghost Road. This section of trail starts at the picturesque Lyell Historic Reserve (110m altitude) in the Upper Buller Gorge (SH6 between Murchison and Inangahua) and ascends to the Lyell Saddle at 875m and then on up to lofty heights of the Lyell Range at just under 1300m. The section of trail that is open terminates at Mt Montgomery.

The Trust has built four huts on the trail – at Lyell Saddle, Ghost Lake, Stern Valley and Specimen Point. The eleven-bunk Lyell Saddle Hut, purpose-built for trail users, is now open to the public. At $15 a night, bunks can be booked online by visiting The Old Ghost Road website.

The Trust is completing the Seddonville end of the trail through to Limestone Creek with this section expected to be opened by April this year. Once completed DOC will take over the maintenance of both trail ends, and are working closely with the Trust to complete the middle 35% section of the trail.

From April 2013 the Mokihinui Forks Hut, which has been recently renovated by DOC, will transfer to the management of the Trust and will become part of the online booking process. DOC also will be upgrading Goat Creek Hut later this year and this too will come under the management of the Trust.

Along with huts, a number of bridges have been constructed, crossing over major rivers and making traversing an area in the Mokihinui Gorge known as "Suicide Bluff" safer for both trampers and cyclists.

When completed the 80km trail is planned to be a four or five day tramp, or a two day mountain bike ride.
